3. It won't....
Now that the national Democratic party is at best barely holding on to a thread of support for public education in general and organized labor/unions as well my fear is it's only a matter of time.

I hope teachers in general hold strong because they are the line of defense on this one.

Of course then I see things like that rotten "Teachers for Reform" commercial that's airing here in the NY/NJ area and I worry that there are more out there that feel that way. Granted, they only seemed to have been able to scare up 3 teachers for the ad, but still.

GOP is solidly against us. ( Against all organized labor, really, but especially organized PS teachers.)

The RW of the DEM party, the $$$ wing, ... currently in ascendance at the national level... has joined the (tea) party. Good issue to triangulate on since there is an amorphous, free-flowing anxiety loose among the general public and demagoguing about schools and teachers strikes a sensitive ( and easily exploitable ) political nerve..

In fact, most of the teacher bashing is a consequence of the teacher glut.... which is a consequence of the economic catastrophe imposed on us by the Bush administration and is being dealt with ineffectively... if not exacerbated... by the fumblings of the current crew.

When teachers are hard to come by , the profession will again become attractive. Supply, demand.

I'll be gone by then, so it won't effect me. But I feel for people who have recently come into the profession. They've got some more tough times ahead.

This is part of the neoliberal agenda - smart people recognize it.
Moderates not so much.

6. When test scores and dropout rates improve
Admittedly, not all under the control of the teachers, but that's your answer as I see it.

7. So, we will never see it improve?
Remember, they are not asking for improvement. They are asking for 100% achievement, which has NEVER BEEN DONE anywhere, at anytime. Unrealistic expectations.

8. It will require a complete societal change.
The War on Teachers won't end until American society changes, because too many pillars on which our society is based are detrimental to a good public education:

  • unfettered capitalism
  • money worship
  • consumerism
  • instant gratification syndrome
  • short attention spans
  • a need to be continuously entertained
  • lack of willingness to make personal sacrifice

This list could go on and on. Basically, there are so many counter-educational forces at work in the very fabric of our nation's primary world view and belief system that the end of the War on Teachers would require a radical restructuring of said world view and belief system.
