I spent 10 years working in NY. My own children 25+ years ago were special needs. My rant is that they don't want to tell me anything about the child/children I am working with here in Florida. In NY I was required to be given the IEPS and case histories, which I was requuired to READ, of all the special needs students I worked with. How do they expect me to work with these kids if I have to literally PRY information out of people? Then they have the nerve to tell me I am SNOOPING? Excuse me? I had access to ALL their files in NY. Here in Florida it seems they don't want me to know anything. I am treated like a glorified babysitter.
Apart from my experiences with my own children growing up, I was required before I could work in the NY schools to take courses on Child Abuse, Rules and Procedures for Reporting it, etc. We had a recent incident with a Head Start Pre-K student and they were badly informed as to what to do. I had to take HIPAA inservice for those with physical disabilities.
I am absolutely furious over this. No, I do not believe that Florida is ranked 5th in the country in education. Wanna buy a bridge, as we say. It will only get worse in Florida with Tricky Ricky, the great businessman and teabagger. You can start right HERE if you want to improve the education of special needs kids.
