NYC recruiting TFA teachers even as they prepare to layoff thousands
Amid threat of layoffs, city is recruiting 500 new teachers for next fall

Critics wonder why the city has accepted the new recruits to work in shortage areas like special education instead of retraining teachers on the payroll.

Even as the threat of thousands of teacher layoffs looms, the city is preparing to hire 500 new ones for next fall, officials said.

Critics wonder why the city has accepted the new recruits - 400 from New York City Teaching Fellows and 100 from Teach for America - to work in shortage areas like special education instead of retraining teachers on the payroll.

"It's mind-boggling that they're hiring when I may lose my job," said Marquis Harrison, 25, who started in the city schools with Teach for America nearly three years ago.

1. So Marquis Harrison has been on the job for three years and is already set to be replaced..
A lot of these TFA kids are going to end up horrendously cynical, they'll be squeezed dry and then discarded as soon as they start asking awkward questions or start making too much money.

2. Teaching is just like selling burgers, isn't it? What's the problem?
The TFA kids you refer to are just the naive innocent ones. The ones who went into TFA cynical, knowing perfectly well what it's up to - where are THEY going to end up?

3. I doubt there are all that many cynical TFA kids..
It usually takes some time to develop cynicism, the young tend to be idealistic and naive.

And who would tell them what's going on with the TFA, their instructors?

4. How can they
get away with this? Isn't there some legal recourse against being laid off and then replaced?

5. Same thing here but they fired them instead of laying them off.
Now they are hiring them back. The public wasn't too pleased.
