5. I had about three of these conversations this year.

On the last week. I'm still baffled. What is so hard about "Do the work I assign to pass this class"? One other kid did manage a month ago to pull himself out of an outright failure to a low C. Then he started demanding a B for doing me a favor for passing my class (I guess, I can't imagine what other basis he thought I owed him that favor). He asked me the last time "What can I do to get a B in this class?". I told him to get a time machine.

7. A question for teachers

I have always wondered about varsity athletes who are also 4.0 students. How do they do it? When my middle school daughter has a track meet, she is usually tied up to at least 8:00 pm. If you have four-five academic classes with homework and tests, how do these exceptional folks manage it. Just completing one day turnaround homework would be a challenge. Are accomodations made for the varsity and other students involved in extracurricular activities (extra days to complete assignments etc?). Not saying it happens, I just want to get some feedback from teachers on the board.

While I debated in High School, I did not achieve a 4.0. It was difficult to achieve my B+/A-, but I least had Sunday to complete my homework (we debated on Friday and Saturday). I guess football players also have an entire weekend unless they have a Thursday night game. The other sports and extracurriculars can have activities during the week though.

8. I have no idea.

I teach ceramics, and all of my class time that isn't demonstration is given over to working on projects in class. I also allow students to come in during my prep period and work if they can get a pass from that instructor for the period they would normally be in and there is a "tutorial" period that they can use once a week to do extra work in. I guess it depends on how organized the student is, and how willing they are to give up leisure time that isn't given over to sports. Other teachers might have a different set-up, I'm not sure.
