Ask students at Plymouth High School what they liked best about Ray Schepansky's class, and odds are they'll say the war game he devised that doubles as a final exam.
Cast as soldiers or insurgents, students compete in virtual combat predicaments. Once, a student blew up a camel, angering locals and complicating matters for U.S. forces.
As elaborate as the weeks-long exercise sounds, it pales compared with solving the riddle of Ray Schepansky.
Since the April morning Schepansky, 53, was arrested for bringing a gun to the 6,200-student campus, students, staff, administrators and prosecutors have debated who Schepansky really is.
Is he an unorthodox teacher targeted by administrators and colleagues?
Is he a ticking time bomb, defused just in time?
