Toronto approves 2nd Africentric school

Toronto District School Board trustees on Wednesday approved the city's second Africentric school, this time for high school students.

Cheers erupted in the packed public gallery after the controversial motion for the high school for black students passed 14-6.

"It's a great opportunity to serve our students and that's what this has always been about," said the board's education director, Chris Spence. "You know, how do we think outside the box and support our students the best way we can."

Students in that school have produced above-average provincial test scores and there is a wait list to get in.

I don't think that ANY racial/cultural segregation in public schools is ever justified, even if to improve test scores.

1. I'm not seeing segregation here

I don't see this as really being segregation so much as freedom to associate. And the article doesn't give any indication that non-African-Canadian students would be barred from attending the school if they really want.

Besides, if we wanted to really do away with this, we would have to get rid of private schools (which segregate on the basis of class), Catholic and Islamic schools (which segregate on the basis of religion), and all-Male schools, (which segregate on the basis of gender).
