KC Mayor Sly James wants to take over school district
Kansas City Mayor Sly James said Thursday that he wants to take full control of the Kansas City School District.

In a letter to state education Commissioner Chris Nicastro, James proposed a series of action steps, some of which would require legislative approval, that would lead to mayoral control of the troubled district.

James said he based his recommendation on a discussion with community leaders concerned about the district’s pending loss of accreditation.

“Although this plan will completely transform the governance of our school district, I believe it is the most appropriate course of action for our community,” James wrote. “I respectfully request your support in its implementation.”

2. They weren't the priority of the school board either.
The Kansas City School System is an island of corruption in the middle of a sea of good school districts.

9. I don't see that
My feeling is the mayor wants a solution that is the least disruptive for the students. And if he does get control of the district, top level jobs would be eliminated.

4. Mayor James, or any mayor for that matter, couldn't possibly
do any worse of a job of running the District than the school board.........

The board has a modus operandi of hiring well-qualified Superintendents, then proceeds to publically undermine and second-guess him (I don't think they've ever hired a female) until he gets fed up and quits!

8. I would think it's always possible
to screw anyone/anything more.

I was disagreeing with the well-qualified description. Unless we're talking about Broad training making superintendents well-qualified (which I don't believe).
