The Warren pick is not equivalent to Obama inviting David Duke to speak.
The more I think about it, the more I think it's the equivalent of Hillary having beaten out the first viable black candidate, and HER deciding to invite David Duke to speak at the inauguration.

In addition to the anger/disgust over the homophobic bigotry, I am starting to add a very real burn over the assholery of beating the first real woman candidate (whom I didn't even support), and rubbing it in the faces of all women by having his first act as president be the honoring of a male supremacist.

2. Rick Warren is not equivalent to the Klan.

He's more like the White Citizens Council: same poisonous hatred but overlaid with a bit of bourgeois respectability.

3. I keep mentioning the anti women stance of Warren as well as his anti Jewish stance.
Warren really is an insult to what should the basic values of Democrats. This is viewed as a politcal decision by some and to be applauded. It seems more important to "reach out" to the "legions" of voters that are evangelical or bigots then to acknowledge the base because this is about "expanding the base". It is all about 2012. The GBTL and women are a given. It is perceived that they have no one else to vote for by some. Prepare for a back lash. This OP won't be popular with some.

6. Amen...comparing the Holocaust to a woman's right to choose smacks
of a Holocaust-denial mentality.

7. The Warren invite is Obama's kiss to those that long for the "White Only" days
These people are not just against LGBTs, they also hate Jews, Catholic, mainline Protestants, interracial marriage, reproductive rights defenders, and women that refuse to submit to male authority.

By inviting Warren, Obama gains nothing and he loses the goodwill and the trust of LGBTs and their hetero allies.

8. Bigotry knows no boundaries...you hate one group, you hate them all...
...I haven't met an anti-semitic person who wasn't also a homophobe and vice versa. Mel Gibson.

9. The Warren pick is a horrible fuck-up in about 795 different ways.
My own personal reserve of goodwill I had for Obama is all but dried up now that I've seen that he thinks homophobia, misogyny, and pseudoscience are all just "another point of view."

This straight white male cannot understand what the fuck Obama is thinking with this pick. If he was trying to court the likes of ME with the Warren invite, then, he's got his head pretty far up his ass.

12. That's another great point. Is science also just another "opinion"?
I do like that this is an amazing lesson in the moral vacancy of peace without justice. Peace without justice is tyranny. Always has been and always will be. Peace without truth is always a war against truth. To say that science is "just another opinion" is barbarism.

15. this whole concept of "courting" in this situation baffles me.
Edited on Sun Dec-21-08 03:39 PM by jonnyblitz
if I were one of the "target" people they were supposedly trying to appeal to I would consider it cynical PANDERING and be INSULTED that they thought i was that easily manipulated UNLESS people really are gullible enough to say, for example "hey look! that preacher that hates those disgusting homos is up there with obama, maybe i will support obama and the whole liberal agenda now!!1" I doubt it. Obama really likes this guy.
