Newsflash scary gay people: reaching out to bigots will help you gain marriage
I just found out that reaching out to bigots gained my parents (different races) the right to marry. I had been led to believe it was some Supreme Court thing, but that is a myth!

I learn lots of things on DU.

1. That's remarkable. Have you told the historians? Everyone is wrong, it turns out.
To which bigot did your parents reach? Is he/she still available?

I want that bigot on my side now. Are his/her terms reasonable?

could not believe a woman from a country we were at war with could marry a white man.

Of course, she is Korean not Vietnamese, but that is not the point. She changed their minds and they later voted to recognize her marriage.

10. Rights should always be put to a popular vote!
Lets ask the RRRW fundies to vote on all of our rights! I'll bet they'd give us full equality in a heartbeat if we just said "pretty please with sugar on top". They don't hate us, after all, they just don't understand us because of how they were brought up and stuff.

I know, call me a dreamer, but I feel a new era is upon us.

against all the mean things I've said about him here on DU.

If only I had held my tongue and reached out to him with kindness. This mess would all be cleared up by now if I'd only shown some understanding, instead of going and supporting that Obama guy to take Bush's place!

19. Newsflash
The op took what was said way out of context and decided to start more shit. While I am at it I should go ahead and say how I really feel about all of this. I have wasted several hours of my night reading a bunch of poor little me posts. Instead of posting crap on a message board why don't you little keyboard commandos get of your asses and do something. I doubt there is anyone on here that has actually done anything to help the cause other than to piss and moan about how you are being mistreated. All you guys are doing is preaching to the choir. Honestly, it's really starting to look a little pathetic.

Now if anyone decides to actually stand up and do something let me know. I am not afraid to get my ass kicked for standing up for what I believe in unlike most of you. I have been there done that. Until then continue with the poor little victim routine. That will get you what you want.

25. Newsflash: This struggle has been going of DECADES.
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 12:33 PM by Zenlitened
People here, posters on DU, have been waging this battle IRL for DECADES. By organizing, by communicating, by advocating, by funding, by writing legislation, or simply by living their lives as gay men and women in a society that is hostile to them.

Just because YOU just woke up to the issue, and had to suffer the terrible indignity of reading several posts on a message board, doesn't make it Breaking News. And just because YOU may have never bothered to lift a finger to help right this wrong, doesn't mean everyone else has been as indifferent and uncaring as you.

Just because you don't understand the reality of it all, doesn't make it any less real.

26. Poor little me.
Who am I to piss and moan like a "poor little victim".
I've just payed taxes for 38 years to a country that codifies my second class citizenship.
I've just had my ass kicked in more than one state, in more than one city/town, because I am a lesbian.
I've just started LGBT centers - marched in parades and political rallies - written my representatives to petition for my rights.

I've just been a good woman, daughter, niece, sister, aunt, lover, wife, and citizen whose family has and will fight for her and loves her.

You're absolutely right. I've been slacking in my old age.

But I wouldn't say this shit to my family if I were you. They are a little pissed off that their "pride and joy" has been treated this way.

27. You want to compare gay bashing stories?
I bet this old lesbian can one up you. I am glad you are getting out and being active. That was the whole point of my post. I am sick of certain people who are all talk and no action. Certain members of our community have a habit of wanting to play the victim instead of taking control of their own lives. You apparently are not one of them. Now if my post offended you then so be it.

29. I would rather compare ways of taking some kind of action.
Comparing war wounds won't get us anywhere. Wouldn't it be more contructive to compare ways we have taken action that we think have made a difference and promoted our cause. I'm not getting any younger. My family and my partner and I were ready to take our vacation in CA next summer to get married. I lived there for 10 years and I was so proud of them. To tell you the truth, I'm very disheartened. I'm tired and almost inconsolable. My mom tells me to hold on, things will change now, it will happen.
We have spent a lot of money to file legal papers so we could have SOME control over our own lives. We had to do so in stages because of the cost. I still do not look forward to the confrontation I would have to have with one of my partners brothers if she is hospitalized. Oh how I'd love to slap a marriage license in his face and tell him to piss off.

32. "I doubt there is anyone on here that has actually done anything to help the cause..."
It's a mistake to assume that posters on a message board don't exist outside of a board you frequent, and haven't taken other action--yet you must surely be aware that any movement needs a forum, and that this is just one of them. This is where some of that action begins, and sometimes it begins with our reminding ourselves that we are victims.

And it can help get us what we want.

36. You really want to know?
Where would you like me to start? Let's see when I was 19 I got a baseball bat to the head for standing up for myself. That cost me 32 days in a coma and close to two years of my life learning to walk and talk again. Oh I also have a lovely scar that runs down the entire left side of my head as a daily reminder. Not to mention that almost 20 years later I still walk like I had a stroke. I am a vocal member of several local advocacy groups. I also gave a very large donation to no on 8 even though I live on the other side of the country. I have given more money over the years to the HRC then I can remember. I have also attended several rallies this year even though I work 90 plus hours a week and I am taking care of my sick partner. So while you are thinking I am just some smart ass posting on a message board in reality I practice what I preach. So if you want to get up and work then let me know. If not don't bother me.

38. What the fuck makes you think people here haven't got off their asses and done something?
Personally I've:

started fighting Prop 8 back when it was still a circulating petition
wrote lttes, articles for on-campus publication (the latter probably get a more receptive audience)
given a speech on the issue in front of about a thousand people
done voter registration
organized and educated students on my campus about the issue, both pre- and post-election
attended multiple rallies, marches and protests
donated more money than I care to contemplate, both pre and post election

And I'm straight, fwiw.

So stuff the "keyboard commando" routine.
