We have MANY straight allies on this board. THANK YOU ALL.
I just wanted those straight friends to realize we know they are here.

And for many of us, our anger doesn't mean we aren't thrilled to death with Barack's Presidency.

WE ARE.

We are just upset with his decision right now.

It doesn't mean we'd change our vote. We wouldn't.

It just means we want to make sure this won't be a pattern in his Presidency.

And we truly thank you for your support (empathy is the greatest virtue in my opinion).

2. Gay rights are civil rights
and when a majority feels empowered to oppress any minority we're all at risk.

Your straight allies on this board understand that.

My only grumble is that with the plethora of posts by GLBT posters, Warren's vicious war against women has gone largely unnoticed.

That's a quibble, though. He's an inappropriate choice for a job that shouldn't be there and everyone of good conscience should be offended by it.

22. you mean . . . there are gay people here?
Yikes! I heard it was contagious!

You know of what I speak: tolerance, open-minded-ness, respect, and other rare attributes that our society has lost over the last eight years.

For myself, I am a dirty minded, hetero, middle-aged male with a really bad sense of humor, and a worse femur, although the tibia seems to be doing quite well, thank you very much. What is really refreshing and pleasant is having a place, even on the GBLT threads, where you don't care, and don't have to care what the sex or sexual preference is of the other people. Even today, after the election of a man of color to the White House, it is still too rare and precious to find a place like that.

What would be nice is, other than one particular collection of oddities and odditrees, is if the rest of the world ended up looking more and more like DU.

27. Please. You never have to say thank you. I came here to say I'm sorry.
It's been busy around the old homestead, what with ice storms, recalcitrant beagles, and family coming in from all over the country for the holidays, so I was just skimming DU. At first, I was shocked to see subject lines that looked like a debate on rights for gays had started up.

I feel like I did 11/5, when I learned Prop H8 had passed - we humans are one fucked up species. I am thoroughly ashamed of us. I've been telling my son and my brother (both gay) for years that I feel things are about to change, that homophobia is on the way out. And I believed it. Now I am so angry I just don't know how to work it out.

We haven't done enough (nothing like stating the obvious :p ) to clean our own Dem house, much less change minds, hearts, and laws on the other side.

I am so sorry. I know that's little or no comfort, but I promise you this: Call on me and I will be there. I will fight at your side. I'm not trying to sound noble or anything. I'm not. I'm just as venally reactionary as anyone. I want to reach through the intertubes and throttle the assholes who can so cavalierly toss off platitudes about sitting down and shutting up and not making a scene and not spoiling any parties. Fuck that and fuck them.

30. It's 100% Thanks to this community and its presence here on DU
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 04:39 PM by Mike 03
This was a huge wake-up call for me, and it would not have happened were it not for the discussion here.

It's really opened my heart in a way that is hard to explain. You taught me a lot of things I didn't know. You triggered me to remember people and situations I had put out of my mind, and caused me to recall the influence of GLBT people I dearly miss. I feel such affection for this community and intense loyalty to stand with you in this fight. It's been way too long. It's time to make things right.

ON EDIT:

I have to echo what someone upthread said so beautifully: You never have to thank me. I came here to apologize for my ignorance.

That was perfect. I wish I had written that. But that's what I feel too. I don't deserve your gratitude. For too long I failed you. I only plead for your foregiveness and assure you that going forward, I'll do better.

38. You're welcome. But it's only doing the right thing and that never needs thanks.
Remember that old Chris Rock bit about Crappy Dads?

Guys say to me, like it was something SPECIAL, "I pay my bills. I take care of my kids."

I say, "So? You wanna cookie? That's what you're SUPPOSED to do!"

I've been spreading this George Washington quote around LGBT, since I have probably spent more time here in the last week than I have in the previous seven years combined, "As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality."
--George Washington

George Washington, if he lived today, would likely also be a Straight Dude Standing With LGBT. This comment comes as close to "proving it" as an assertion like this can be "proved".

Now, if only you would recognize that the "set" of "your allies" consists of everyone who supports the goal of marriage equality -- and is not limited to everyone who supports each and every opinion you voice over each strategic calculation of the incoming Obama administration.

Nor is that set of allies limited only to those willing to support each and every "outrage eruption" against each strategic calculation of the incoming Obama administration.

Nor is that set of allies limited only to those who are sufficiently outraged by the lack of sufficient outrage by others over each strategic calculation of the incoming Obama administration.

It should be obvious that the "set" in the first paragraph is larger than the sets in the next two paragraphs, and limiting your allies to the sets in the last two paragraphs actually reduces the support for your ultimate goal.
