In new video, Rick Warren accuses gays of "hateful attacks," "hate speech," "Christ-ophobia,"
Merry Christmas from Rick Warren! You're all hateful, evil, and not even Christian!

Barack Obama's good buddy Rick Warren recorded a video yesterday, talking about the outcry over his being chosen to given the invocation at Obama's swearing in. And it's a doozie. Warren's big mouth, and apparent ego, is pretty much guaranteeing that this controversy will continue all the way up until the inauguration and beyond.

In the new video, Warren accuses gays of "hate speech," of launching "hateful attacks" against him, and he then says that gay and lesbian Americans have "Christ-ophobia," a clear effort to mock the term "homophobia." He goes on to explain that gays are "afraid of any Christian," suggesting that gay and lesbian Americans - gay and lesbian Obama voters - are not Christians. He then goes on to call gays criticizing him "evil." All this from a man who compared gay marriage to incest and pedophilia, and who explicitly bans "unrepentant gays" from his church membership.

(He also adds that bloggers are "rude" and "need to get a life." I don't really care about that part, it's just more evidence that we're getting under Warren's skin, and that he's not quite ready for prime time.)

1. Does this mean we don't have to shut up about it now?
Is it still 'game on', as it were?

The one good thing about all of this is that it has allowed us to see very clearly who our friends and enemies are.

3. Why wouldn't gays be "afraid of any christian?"
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 04:07 PM by BOSSHOG
And by golly its just fine and dandy not to be a christian IN THE LAND OF THE FREE!!

Those poor persecuted Christians in America. Maybe they should all move out of the country and found their much coveted theoracy where they can hate in peace.

4. Wow.
If this continues, I suspect he won't be giving that invocation after all.

5. No, we're being told all over DU that this video has nothing to do with gay people.

7. It has everything to do with gay people.
And he's wrong when it comes to that. But he was taken out of context unfairly.

Rick Warren is a liar. For starters.

19. You obviously didn't.
The quote referred to above were attributed to his emailers. He wasn't saying them himself. Now, he didn't tell them they were wrong - which he should have done. But he also didn't say it himself.

You can't proclaim to be on the side of truth and righteousness some of the time. It's all or nothing. Lord knows you don't need to take his words out of context to put together an argument against him - so why do it?

6. Did you actually watch it?
Because the quotes are really taken out of context. The guy's woefully wrong on a lot of things, probably on just about all things, frankly. Calling a spade a spade, those quotes are out of context.

8. I just watched it and I think that Rick Warren is a smiling liar. He's really a piece of work.
Rick Warren is not a nice person. He is not Christian by any definition that I believe. Not only are those quotes not taken out of context, they really under-describe just how nasty and underhanded Rick Warren is in that video.

17. I did not argue his truthfulness, nor his quality of character.
The quotes were still taken far, far out of context.

14. What quotes are you referring to?
The ones comparing gay marriage to incest and pedophilia? If those are the ones he is contradicting what he said in the Ann Curry Today Show interview on this video. He DID make those comparisons.

...the media never gets it 100% correct, and thrives on controversy.

Everything after that?
Wrong, dumb, hypocritical, self-serving, contradictory, religiously insane, historically incorrect, divisive, stupid and just plain wrong and dumb.

The man really is not very smart!

11. Is there a link to the video?
The one YouTube link I tried in another thread went to a clip of him being weasely (expected) and defensive (it's about time) but nothing with the christo-phobe stuff.

edited to add: I think both Obama and Warren think they are doing the right thing by looking past their differences and embracing their common interests. They've gone about it in the wrong way, though. And someone needs to clue Pastor Warren: it's one thing to say people shouldn't demonize others who are different, but it rings hollow when you actually *do* the opposite of what you say.

Also, I always have a problem with people who say they love everyone. Nobody loves everyone. I get what he's trying to communicate, but seriously - nobody loves everyone. Nobody.

12. Well, that hateful bigot won't keep me and my partner and son out of church tomorrow night
where we'll celebrate Christmas with a Methodist congregation that actually welcomes gays.

Hey Rick - We're not Christ-ophobic, and we aren't afraid of Christians. We are quite upset by you though. A person who claims to be a Christian who says and does nothing resembling what a real Christian would say or do... that is definitely something to fear.

If you think the truth is rude or hateful, then that's your problem, not ours.

As far as getting a life, that is all anyone is asking for, normal life.

21. christo-phobia?
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 06:48 PM by BattenS
I devoted two years of my life studying Religious History and Theology-believe me, Salesman Warren, I do not have Christo-phobia. What I do have, however, is a 21st Century perspective of religion and not your "New and Improved Christian Brand-with Sparkles" that you attempt to sell to the public..

Moreover, I have neither christo-phobia, nor fear of any christian-especially the likes of you. I do have utter contempt for your disgusting display of self aggrandizement at the expense of others like me, your lies and misrepresentations of the glbt community, and the fact that you have to tell glbt persons to 'get a life' when you are such an odious slug that you had to change your website to make it appear as if you are the victim of hate.

Those glbt persons and our friends who are wise see through your mask know that each time you open your mouth, put fingers to the keys, that you reveal the truth about yourself each day. With each little move you make- you dig yourself in a own hole leading the blind flock with you.

While some glbt persons may wish to reach across the aisle to you to form new bonds, what is sad is that many of them will draw back a stub that you shred. You've already proven how willing you are to work with GLBT persons (as long as they are famous), and that you'd take away the basic rights of any American who disagrees with you. What is sad is this: Once you do away with all of Us, the GLBT community, and our rights-you'll launch your attack on women, and others. Those here who wish to believe PE Obama was wise to work with you see this, but they refuse to look at the truth.

I do, pray, that you learn from your lesson as the leader of the Divine Invocation. g*d works in mysterious ways and perhaps g*d is showing you now that a true belief is not a pick-and-mix to launch your agenda of hate. We will have to see, though. Right now you are screaming about hate- you get what you put out in the world, Salesman Warren. Don't cry victim when you were all too willing to abuse the very g*d you represent.

There are many Gay Christians, fat mouth Warren doesn't acknowledge them.

He is whining because he has made himself a target. He loves no one except himself.

We're merely expressing our "deeply held beliefs". He can't fault us for that--nobody can!

(See, if it works for them it can work for us too.)
