Another dumb post, but I'm so sad people here are leaving
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 05:51 PM by Mike 03
You have had a huge impact on my way of thinking, my life, everything.

It makes me very sad to think that any of my GLBT friends might be leaving DU. You can't even begin to imagine the huge, positive impact you have had on my life. And I'm so average that I can only guess you have influenced others just as much.

I love you.

If you really must leave, I respect that, but I hope you come back.

You have made me a better human being. That is the highest compliment I can pay anyone.

Sorry, this post isn't very eloquent. It is written out of pure passion and sadness.

Be well.

3. Honest question: Why should we come back?
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 06:00 PM by TechBear_Seattle
Obama has made it clear that we have no place in his administration, and that his embracing our issues was just an electioneering strategy to get our votes, nothing more. The Democratic Party has told us, in no uncertain terms, that our pass into the Big Tent has expired, thank you, and we must leave now but do come back in three and a half years with checkbooks in hand. Many members of the Democratic Underground have shown their utter contempt at our reaction to watching our constitutional rights and our hopes for a different America crumble around us, and have vocally and repeatedly ridiculed our worries that change means no change for us. Such contempt and ridicule is more often than not allowed to stand while our reactions are more often than not locked with little explantion and no appeal.

So I will ask again. Why should those of us who leave (or who are very quickly reaching the steep ledge of their ability to tolerate all this) ever come back?

Edited for grammar and spelling.

5. Who can blame you? I don't. The reaction here has been awful, cruel.
It's not that I blame anyone for leaving. It just makes me cry that it had to be this way.

11. Because we will continue to remain the Democratic UNDERGROUND
The forces of mediocrity are doing their best to infect and corrupt the Obama administration. This is why we need to hang together more than ever, else we will all hang separately.

12. OK, now.
If YOU take off, I, Tom Wright, will personally come to Seattle, track you down and force you to log onto DU.

Get those thoughts out of your mind, Friend, let the dust settle on this one.

And Merry Christmas.

6. Sorry to ask a stupid question, but when will the Prop 8 be revisited?
I mean, is it possible repeal the decision? Is it already set in stone?

7. There have been some briefs filed in court to overturn Prop H8.
The proceedings are set to start in March IIRC.

8. I think the CA attorney general is asking the CA supreme court to overturn Prop 8
as unConstitutional, which it is.

But I don't know enough to know how much power he has. The CA SC has already ruled that Gay Marriage is constitutional once. So it seems like Prop 8 would be illegal.

16. That depends; there are a number of options
1) The California Supreme Court could rule that, because Prop 8 eliminated established constitutional rights, it is a revision to the state Constitution (ie a substantial change) and not an amendment (ie a tweaking of details.) The State Constitution allows only amendments to be submitted by petition; revisions must first be approved by two thirds of both the State Assembly and the State Senate. Such a ruling would retroactively invalidate Proposition 8 on the grounds that it should never have been proposed in the first place.

2a) The California Supreme Court could rule from the bench that Prop 8 is valid, but unenforceable, as the constitutional guarantees of equal rights, upon which the marriage ruling was based, overrides all other prohibitions even when such prohibitions are in the State Constitution. There is actually precedent for this: Alabama's state constitution mandated segregation until it was changed in 2004.

2b) A new set of marriage cases can wend their way through the state courts and get appealed to the California Supreme Court. The Court could then effectively reissue its previous marriage ruling, with an addendum that effectively declares Proposition 8 to be overriden and unenforceable.

3) The matter could be referred to federal courts on Constitutional grounds, and the US Supreme Court could rule that Proposition 8 and all other marriage bans violate the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution.

This was a big mistake by Barack. I expect him to make up for it.

Basic human rights are non-negotiable. Comparing gays to pedophiles and polygamists is never acceptable.

30. Like Bill Clinton, he probably won't make up for it, and you know what,
next time he steps in doo-doo he can get himself out of it. I won't be lifting my pinkie finger to explain it away or make excuses. He can do that himself. And I also won't be giving him another dime of my money. (With the caveat, 'unless things change.')

23. I'm not leaving
I've been fighting for so long, I don't know what else to do. I can't just give it to the RW'ers and I can't just give it to the Dems who haven't learned yet. I can't just throw it up to chance; that works as well as buying a Lotto ticket (I'm still broke, y'see).

If you can't go through 'em, go around 'em. If you can't go around 'em, go above 'em. If you can't go above 'em, kick 'em in the nads and keep truckin'. But don't stop until we are free, equal, and full citizens.

26. It's a cycle hon, an almost inevitable cycle following obama's win
But many will be back and some sadly will not but just like an amazing cacophony piece at burning man, people wandered in, people wandered out, but the beat was consistent and rhythmic, just like life. Maybe that was just all too profound for me because I was on some amazing acid. But the point it, well, pointless, except to say, I think it will be ok.

31. My time spent here has been dwindling....
and it goes well beyond this issue. You simply can NOT have a civil disagreement here- everything is black or white, hot or cold, good or bad, etc... And I think we're all smart enough to realize that life doesn't work that way.

I've learned a lot with my time here... I've done my share of venting, and seeking out advice in the face of some hardships that I faced. And I got a lot of good vibes and shoulders to cry on, for which I will always be grateful- even humbled.

Am I leaving DU entirely? Probably not- I'll lurk, and if my travel plans ever include areas where I know some of you are, I'll send a PM to see if any of you even remember me and perhaps would care to partake of coffee or beer.

Otherwise, I'm not going to be on here much.
