Lifetime becomes gay central this weekend (but get your tissues handy)
Saturday At one pm you get the Matthew Shepard story (the NBC television film not the Laramie project), at 9 pm you get Prayers for Bobby, at 10 am Sunday you get Doing Time on Maple Drive, and at 4pm on Sunday you get A Girl Like Me The Gwen Araujo story. All sad films but I know three are very good and the new one comes highly recommended. So get your hankies out and have a good cry.

1. You want a cry? Watch "It's My Party." I'm tough, but that broke me.

3. yeah that is rough
The AIDS era of gay filmmaking is full of tear jerkers. I still remember watching Longtime Companion on PBS with my mother in the other chair. I hadn't told my parents about myself yet and I was a total basket case when they had the scene at the end where everyone who had died is walking toward heaven. I think she may have had a clue at that point.

9. Incredibly difficult to watch
I thought I would hate the mother, instead I found myself pitying her. My real anger is at the churches, mosques, synagogues that teach these lies to their congregations.

10. can you imagine the horror of waking up six months later
and knowing you did that to your own son. In attempting to save his soul she drove him to suicide and has to live with that horror every single day.

13. I can't imagine that sort of pain
It all comes down to ignorance and lack of any real education. These preachers do so much damage, more damage then anyone knows. They teach what they were taught, and so on and so on. I an grateful my own children have never been around that sort of hate. Maybe someday we will evolve past this as humans.

14. the arrogance of those people is what really makes it evil
To give the kind of sermon that pastor gave at that kids funeral was the height of arrogance. Pure evil.

15. The only way to combat the ignorance is to outnumber the ignorant
There are more and more churches and ministers who are either GBLT or are completely accepting of GBLT people. If those numbers continue to grow, slowly the other churches influences will be dampened. You have to tip the balance. I think we are heading in that direction.

16. I hope so
I was lucky, not strong but lucky, to make it to the other side. A couple of great guys at the right time and AA saved my ass. Just a little less luck here or there and I could have been Bobby.

18. combating ignorance is done with education
with evangelicals i simply have asked them, "what do you think God would have gay people do?"

i remind them that God nowhere promises in the Bible to change anyone's sexuality.

i can't change the world and it's harder to change one mind it seems.

but if i can just get them to understand what they are asking of gay people is impossible and it's wrong to ask and how hurtful it is to ask.

20. This is interesting. Lifetime has sure turned into an important place for a lot of people.
There was a big question mark five or so years ago about whether Lifetime was a good place to produce and air a movie, but that question has been answered. A few years ago, it even looked possible that Lifetime would go out of business, but they held on.

I'm so glad that people watch and care about the content aired on Lifetime. I'm glad that the themes dealt with in these films reach people and move them. That is very gratifying.
