Bellevue school recognizes gay students group

A dispute between Bellevue East High School and a group that supports homosexual students has been resolved to the club’s satisfaction.

The American Civil Liberties Union Nebraska, which intervened in the dispute, said Thursday that a Gay-Straight Alliance at the school has received full recognition by Bellevue East as a student club.

Bellevue East had resisted allowing the group to operate under that name as a school-sponsored club. Instead, the school suggested that the group be the Diversity Club.

As a sponsored group, the Gay-Straight Alliance can have club announcements on Bellevue East’s message boards, can put up posters about club meetings and can be featured in the school yearbook.
