University Dean Quits Over Same-sex Benefits
(Madison, Wisconsin) When Wisconsin lawmakers last month voted against providing domestic partner benefits to University of Wisconsin System employees it was the final straw for University of Wisconsin-Madison dean of students Luoluo Hong.

This week Hong announced she was leaving the university.

"When I came here three years ago, Wisconsin was on the cutting edge of civil rights for lesbians, bisexuals and trans-genders," Hong, who is straight, told the Journal Sentinel. "That legacy has not been my experience."

Hong who is married and does not need domestic partner benefits has accepted a job as a dean of student affairs at Arizona State.

She said that the lack of benefits in the Wisconsin university system has cost it good job candidates.

1. Bravo!
I am so elated when straight people take a stand on our side.
Her doing so makes it easier for the next person to follow.

2. I still want someone to fire a straight employee, just because they're
straight. Those lack of protections cut both ways.

Hat's off to this lady for backing up her words with action. I remember when the majority of Americans did the same thing.

3. She left WI to go to ASU, which also doesn't offer DP Benefits??
Sort of weakens her act of protest, to go to one university to another, neither of which offer DP benefits. According to the ASU HR's benefits page, no domestic partnership bennies are currently offered. Does anyone know if ASU is poised to change their policy? Otherwise, her move doesn't make any sense...
