Barry Warns of "Civil War" Over Gay Marriage
D.C. Council member Marion Barry (D-Ward 8), the only council member to vote against the bill today to legalize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere, predicted today there could be a "civil war" in the District if the Council decides to take up a broader gay marriage bill later this year.

"All hell is going to break lose," Barry said while speaking to reporters. "We may have a civil war. The black community is just adamant against this."

----

WTF is wrong with Barry? I could have sworn he was pro marriage equality in the past.

2. I guess it depends on whose votes he needs
At this point, I'm sure 9/10 of D.C. residents wish Barry would just fade away for finally get incarcerated for his continued tax evasion.

5. A civil war would definitely put this on the front page of every paper.
And I think that would only benefit us in the long run. It's more publicity to demand our equal rights.

Pretty much show Mr Barry just how out of touch he is. At least I think so.

It's good to see you Thom - I haven't been here much lately. Been kind of staying away for my own peace of mind.

23. "The Black Community"
I'd love for that guy to tell me what this 'Black Community' he is referring to. If he hadn't realised - there is no such thing as community, only individuals who freely associate with others. From my limited exposure to African Americans - most couldn't care one way or another considering there are far more important things to be concerned about, like paying the rest, power bill, school fee's, etc.

11. Sorry, that's just not possible.
No one person can "speak for the black community," and that includes you, Marion Barry. I've read this a hundred times here on DU from people who'd know better than *I* would, and I'll believe them over Barry. "The black community" is not a monolithic, homogeneous entity. There will be a few people upset about it, but not the entire "community," and those who are upset will get over it.

At least, I hope so. Anything else would be awfully embarrassing for DC.

Will black homosexuals fight for blacks or homosexuals? How will you identify the "enemy", Barry? All good-looking men with decent fashion sense and well-manicured nails are fair game?

He needs to work out the rules of engagement before he advocates such a thing publicly.

24. Just some religious leaders.
A lot like ones we saw in Iowa, or any other place that has had marriage equality in the forefront.

http://www.edgewashington.com/index.php?ch=news&sc=&sc2=news&sc3=&id=90587
<snip>
After the rally, City Council Chairman Vincent Gray’s office confirmed that Barry had signed onto the marriage amendment as a co-introducer. Barry did not return a request for comment before Metro Weekly deadline and when asked to clarify the discrepancy as he left the rally, he said, ’’I didn’t sign nothing.’’

Bishop Harry Jackson identified himself to the crowd as part of the Missionary Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Washington D.C. and Vicinity, organizer of Tuesday’s rally. Jackson is also one the country’s foremost African-American clergy opposing marriage equality, senior pastor of Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Md., and founder of the College Park-based High Impact Leadership Coalition.

’’Today we are being radical,’’ Jackson said in his rally speech. ’’Radical means we are returning to the roots, and the word of God.... This is not about hating anybody.... This is about loving Jesus.

’’This is not about gay rights. There’s a difference between civil rights and sacred rights. I want you to understand that marriage has been defined by God, and everybody in America does not have an equal civil right to get married. Two close relatives do not have a right to get married because it’s not good for the culture; a man cannot marry a 3-year-old because it’s not good for the culture. "You with me?’’

’’Yes!’’ the crowd replied.

Pastor George C. Gilbert Sr. of the Holy Trinity United Baptist Church in Northeast said it’s time to respond to the ’’precious heterosexual ethic in our religion, society and culture’’ that has come under attack by gay people. He told the crowd that ’’homosexual activists’’ are attempting to destroy ’’biblical values and moral standards.’’

’’We know that one’s race, religion and national origin are all protected under the Constitution," Gilbert said, "but the homosexuals want to have their sexual choices protected, as if being gay was the same as being black. This is untrue, and it’s very offensive.’’

A small group of marriage-equality advocates also gathered on Freedom Plaza Tuesday morning. Aside from Wiggins, they included Jeffrey Richardson, president of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club; Mark Levine; Richard Rosendall, vice president of political affairs for the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance; Rabbi Robert Saks; Bob Summersgill; Peter Rosenstein and representatives from both the Human Rights Campaign and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

Saks, who is straight, has served for 18 years as rabbi to Bet Mishpachah, the local GLBT congregation. He handed out a three-page explanation of his interpretation of Sodom in the Book of Genesis, debunking claims that the story is anti-gay, not shirking from heated discussion with rally participants.

Also not shirking was Rosendall, who said, "Shame on you, Marion," as Barry passed him. The councilmember replied, "I support you on everything else."

But Rosendall got the last word, saying, "You talk out of both sides or your mouth. Shame on you."

29. Very strong rightwing connection with one of the protest leaders.
One of the anti- marriage rights "leaders." This is strictly a left vs. right issue.

The rightwing is everywhere in everytown and city. RRRW use this wedge policy to divide progressives and promote stereotypical fears to mobilize people to not suport gay rights.

This is not a racial issue, this is not a religious issue, it is another rightwing issue dressed up as religiosity and it's strictly left vs. right politics as we have seen for the last eight years.

Ties to the dogbeaterdobson group and not a Dem and very right wing.

Bishop Harry Jackson: “Registered Democrat”
By Kyle | May 19, 2008 - 3:50pm
Ever since Bishop Harry Jackson first emerged on the political scene a few years ago, he has used the fact that he is a “registered Democrat” as a means of gaining traction in the media in order to assist the Religious Right in furthering its agenda.

And push the right-wing agenda he has: fighting against hate crimes legislation; participating in right-wing events like the “Justice Sunday” rallies and Values Voter Summits; hobnobbing with the Religious Right powerbrokers in The Arlington Group; serving as a loyal foot-soldier fighting the War on Christmas; and writing columns criticizing Barack Obama and others minimizing concerns about the thousands of people being killed in the war in Iraq by contrasting those deaths to the “genocidal murder” of “millions of black babies.

Most recently, Jackson has been paling around the country with the Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins, with whom he wrote a book entitled “Personal Faith Public Policy” and now, joining Perkins for regular video features called “The TRUTH in Black and White” (Jackson is black, Perkins is white, get it? If you don't, Perkins kindly points it.)

Point Man for the Wedge Strategy:

Harry Jackson is the face of the Religious Right's

outreach to African American Christians

by Peter Montgomery

Senior Fellow, People For the American Way Foundation

<snip>
Jackson says that the "threat to marriage" and the broader assault on Judeo Christian values "have prompted a powerful new conversation between white and black evangelicals" and forged relationships that "are in part fueling the transformation of the conservative evangelical movement." Indeed, he celebrates the passage of anti-gay amendments in 2008 as the hope for the future of the Religious Right:

<snip>
Gays as the Enemy

Jackson was an active supporter of anti-gay ballot initiatives in 2008. He took part in conference calls designed to rally conservative pastors to support Proposition 8 in California. And he spent time on the ground in Florida, mobilizing support for Amendment 2. "There is a national agenda by the homosexual lobby to break down and redefine the family," he said in an Amendment 2 press release. "If we do not protect marriage now, then their agenda will advance and we will face a threat to our religious freedom to preach the full truth of God's word on issues like this."

<snip>

Attacking Obama

Jackson, who opposed the election of Barack Obama, began bad-mouthing Barack Obama and questioning the sincerity of his religious faith long before the Democratic nomination was settled. Like other Religious Right leaders, Jackson was no fan of John McCain. But he saw McCain as a much better choice than Barack Obama, especially after McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate.

In 2006, then-Senator Obama urged Democrats to "acknowledge the power of faith in Americans' lives" and "compete for the support of Evangelicals and other churchgoers." Jackson was unimpressed, calling Obama's remarks "political" and disingenuous" and saying "I think this is politics as usual - that there's not really sincerity behind this." Jackson was angry that Sen. Obama would not support his efforts to pass a federal constitutional amendment banning marriage for same-sex couples.

And in October 2007, Jackson again questioned the sincerity of Obama's faith and challenged his decision not to attend the Family Research Council's "Washington Briefing" conference:

Ironically not only will you be burning pink triangles in our front yards and lynching drag queens (I guess), but you'll also face the same level of disgust that rational people felt when it happened to "your" people (I say that only because he claims some kind cultural iconoclasm).

Now who's the violent bigot? Get the holy living FUCK out of our lives, please, and stay there, before we put you there. War on.

30. Anyone who is just adamant against gay marriage doesn't have to have one.
I heard him on some TV show (I think it was Stewart) with religious "leaders" making the baseless claim that gay marriage is immoral without anything at all to justify that claim except that it offends his bronze-age god. When will these zealots get it through their thick heads that not everyone is part of their religion? Once again, true believers expect everyone else to bear the cost of their convictions.

Marion Barry, George W. Bush, same shit. I guess all their past transgressions are automatically irrelevant now that they have Jesus and their Jesus says gay people are worse than crack smokers, coke snorters, hooker chasers, serial divorcers, adulterers, torturers, war criminals, public-prayin' hypocrites, corrupt politicians, frog exploders, chronic liars, rich people who steal from the poor...

oh wait. The Jesus in the book I read didn't say any of that. But you know how addicts are. Their way or the highway. Their delusions reign supreme.
