Report: Obama can stop the discharge of openly gay and lesbian service members now
"I would love to see a White House response to the arguments in this study, but I'm sure we'll continue to get chirping crickets. It makes the excuses for why the Obama Administration thinks it can do NOTHING about DADT is pure baloney.

A new report released today, "How to End 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell': A Roadmap of Political, Legal, Regulatory, and Organizational Steps to Equal Treatment," sponsored by the Palm Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara, clearly presents a way the President can stop the discriminatory discharge of gay and lesbian service members without Congress passing a law. It boils down to three points (the full release is below the fold). "

2. He's busy disregarding the suffering he causes so he hovers nervously over those he might offend.
Treasury, Justice, the wars. All way too far right to do anything but keep the status quo and ignore us citizens who get hurt.

3. Maybe he will. That's ingenious to suspend DADT pendng legislation.
And it would facilitate legislation. After hearing Clifford Alexander with Rachel Maddow last night, I'm quite hopeful for action sooner rather than later. There aren't many people closer to Barack Obama than Clifford Alexander and his family. I really thought he was inspiring last night -- and he inspired me as a straight person to work as hard as I can to oppose the injustices and shine some light in the corners of ignorance. It's certainly going to happen -- there's just NO reason to push it down the road any longer, because that would only extend the stupidity.

4. To be honest...
After having read that it did not in any way sell me on the notion that right here, right now, he could suspend DADT. I'm fairly convinced this will have to be done through legislation.

Ironically Colin Powell actually has stated that he never wanted this to be a law. He wanted it to be a DOD policy that would remain under the jurisdiction of the DOD, not cemented in law books. That man had a lot of great things to contribute, I wish more people had listened to him on some matters.

5. They did listen to him -- to keep gays out of the military
Between that and the UN fiasco, I'm no fan of Powell.
