1. We know what the ruling will be then.
The purpose was to avoid White Night riot anniversary. x(

5. I tend to take the pessimistic view, too....that there would be fear of riots.
I would like to be totally wrong, and have it be because they didn't want people getting excessively exuberant over a holiday weekend. I don't think that's it, though....

2. According to your link, it's because the date coincides with riots.
And the court has apparently agreed:

Forthcoming Opinion Filings

May 20 2009 -- No opinions were announced for filing on Thursday, May 21, 2009.
There is no pending notice of forthcoming opinion filings. When opinions are expected to file, notices are generally posted the day before. Opinions are normally filed Mondays and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m.

7. This decision could probably go either way at this point.
I initially thought it would be to uphold Prop. 8, but in light of the Iowa decision and legislation in the Northeast, I now think the CA court could try using some of the reasoning from those discussions as a means of rejecting Prop. 8. So who knows.

9. No. The SFPD and SDPD were put on "alert" about tomorrow's ruling...
...before Gavin Newsom asked the court to delay said ruling. Why would police be put on alert and Gavin Newsom concerned about the anniversary of the White Night riot if the ruling was favorable to the gay community? No, they are expecting the ruling to anger Teh Gays and fear that our anger will result in rioting.

13. To be fair though I doubt the court would outright TELL anyone prior to the release what the ruling
was. I suspect it's more likely the police department asked the court to give them a heads up, irregardless.

18. Newsom needs to make a statement ahead of the decision.
And preferably one that is more about H8 than about his upcoming campaign. I got through to his com office once. Will try again as time permits to see if he plans to do something more than deny the initial report.

21. whether gavin asked them or not -- this is the supreme's responsibility.
that and the intiative process in cali.

after hearing the case -- could any one genuinely be surpised if they upheld h8?

the intiative process is holding every one captive.

23. I never believed the White night connection
White night is not a huge thing. The original riot was in a moment of anger. White is dead -- as are a lot of people who rioted. Those of us who were full of piss and vinegar back then are a little beyond rioting age. The folks who are full of piss and vinegar didn't live through those times.

I don't think there would have been some confluence of White Night anger and PropH8 anger.

Actually, pushing the decision further out creates another problem. It puts the decision closer to SF Pride. So, at Pride, the wound will still be open, there will be upwards of a million gay folks in the city for the 40th anniversary of Stonewall, and the alcohol will be flowing freely for several days. That would concern me more. It wouldn't take much to get things going.

30. I just meant
it's not something that gets people in a rioting mood. I still think Pride, with more people and more alcohol is a much more volatile situation.
