Maine Gay Rights Bill Faces Repeal Bid
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/06/062805maine.htm

A conservative Christian group Tuesday submitted more than 57,000 signatures on a petition calling for a referendum to repeal the state's civil rights protections for gays and lesbians.

The signatures must still be verified, but the number is far more than is required to force the issue to a vote.

The gay rights bill was passed in March and amends the Maine Human Rights Act making discrimination in employment, housing, credit, public accommodations and education based on sexual orientation or gender identity illegal.

1. It'll be interesting
to see if there is a vote on this in Maine. While I think it is too early to win equal marriage at the ballot box (how would civil rights for African-Americans have fared in any of the 50 states' electorates in 1967?) most blue state Americans don't favor taking employment and housing equality away from gays and lesbians.

It might be a victory that shows the fundies they're not on quite the roll they think they are.
