Legislation was introduced in the House on Wednesday that would allow non-married employees of the federal government to apply for benefits for their long-term partners - the same rights already given to married employees.

The Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act, introduced by Rep Barney Frank (D-MA) has more than 50 cosponsors.

It would allow non-married partners of federal employees to apply for benefits such as health insurance, retirement benefits, life insurance and compensation for work injuries.

but of course, the religious right won't like either. The NJ Domestic Partnership Law, besides gays, lets straight couples over the age of 62 apply for Domestic Partnerships.

As an aside, my niece works for a nationwide office supply chain which had this policy. When her live in boyfriend of 5 years, lost his job, she covered him for medical benefits under the company's Domestic Partnership policy.
