Kansas Republican Wants Gay Adoptions Review

A conservative legislator wants to review policies allowing gays and lesbians to adopt children in foster care, an issue gay rights advocates feared eventually would arise after voters approved a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

Rep. Steve Huebert (R-Valley Center) told the Lawrence Journal-World he is pursuing the issue on behalf of a constituent worried that her granddaughter might be adopted by a lesbian and raised by a lesbian couple.

State law is silent on whether gays and lesbians can adopt foster children, who generally are in state custody because of allegations of abuse or neglect.

2. well if she's worried about her granddaughter then she

can damn well adopt her granddaughter herself.

Personally I'd be worried a child of mine might be adopted by a fundie freakjob and forced to pray and sway three times a week at church and wear a bonnet or homespun trousers whenever outside.

I'd be worried a gay child of mine might be adopted by an ignorant hateful set of parents who thought it was more important to learn the bible than to learn a profession.

The truth is I'd much rather any child of mine was raised by gay parents because I know how hard they'd fight and how decent and fair they'd be and how fiercely they would love that child, and sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with anything if you don't make anything of it.

3. A "grandmother" is concerned?

Wonder why she doesn't raise her grandchild that is in foster care? The state, when a child is placed in foster care first gives immediate "fit" family members the choice of taking in the child. If no relative that is "fit" takes in the child the child is then placed in foster care.

So why should she have any say on what happens to the child?

4. Working on it.

The call came through last night. Our state wide organization is not set up yet but we are well on the way. Our groups have come together and we are working on bylaws etc.

It is good that this did not happen earlier, we are closer to being ready to deal with this I think.

I will keep you all informed if I get anything more on this and I will let you know the direction we are going to take. I am on the perifery of this but involved. I may ask for help.
