Cardinal: Children Of Gay Couples Cannot Be Baptized
These people never cease to amaze me. The child, it seems, bears the 'sin' of the parents.

(Ottawa) A Canadian cardinal who had been considered a possible successor to Pope John Paul says that the children of married same-sex couples cannot be baptized in the Catholic Church.

Testifying at a Senate committee hearing into the same-sex marriage bill Marc Cardinal Ouellet said that the Conference of Catholic Bishops has decided that if both parents want to sign the certificate of baptism the church will not allow the blessing to take place.

Ouellet said that the decision is one of several that have arisen in the Church as a result of same-sex marriage. Gay marriage is already legal in Quebec - Ouellet is from Quebec City - and all but two provinces and two territories. The bill before the Senate would extend same-sex marriage to those areas of the country where gays cannot currently wed.

"If I take the example of the ceremony of baptism, according to our canon law, we cannot accept the signatures of two fathers or two mothers as parents of an infant," Cardinal Ouellet told the committee.

1. Hateful. Hateful. Hateful.
I just don't understand this. The children suffer...because of rank homophobia. Unbelivable.

2. eh, not just children of gay couples
My niece couldn't be baptized by her mother's Catholic church. She was born out of wedlock. *puke*

3. Why is Catholic Church attendance falling off?
It's crap like this. Would Christ have condoned something as heinous and stupid as this? I only hope this is one ignorant man and not an official position because if it is, it's going to backfire bigtime.

I'm a Catholic, by the way.

5. Few times she has come with me to church,
my lesbian daughter gets more looks from the people in the pews than the priests actually. Father Manny will go out of his way to come up to her and bless her when he sees her.

Maybe he thinks she needs it more than anybody else?

4. Someone has told the Church to uphold the political pillars of the right.
Will fail miserably. Many a generation in Quebec knows the tally of buying in. So sorry that it is obvious. 1960s people lolled around and said " so they catholic church was going wild with mom and saying "hell 15 kids is fine"". And a generation later the Church just ketches up with the closest whore: neocons. That will go over well.

The Catholic's Churches' biggest problem is that first the TV will talk about the "plan" in America. Then on to Canadian TV news. And finally the news of Quebec. All of whom know what bad information looks like. Cause they've seen so much. (You think canadians are discerning... )

Probably not a good idea for the church to play games with the kids of women who lived no control over their lives. I mean - not even the rhythm method. Served Anglophile leaders well when the British were in power - as they had been everywhere.. but was awfully ugly when dominion anglophones looked at it all. Shriveled when it came time for Liberals or Canadians to work through the way things were. Those liberals picked up lots of stuff. A fire lit under them by independants.

You say "Someone has told the Church to uphold the political pillars of the right".

I say the Church created them. This one, anyway.

6. What I don't understand about this and similar stories ...
... it why any gay person would have anything to do with the Roman Catholic Church at all.

Sure the Church stinks, but don't we all already know that?

Is this gay couple superstitious enough to be worried that their baby will go to Hell if not baptized?

Why even bother? Find a gay friendly church.

8. Is this cardinal serious?
Does he honestly think that refusing to let gay parents have their children baptized by some pedophile priest will have some sort of spiritual leverage? ROTFLMAO ! ! !

I'd say it is even more likely that heteros will shun baptism in a Church that played coverup of their own heinous sexual behaviors for decades.
