Gay Pride Week Resolution Pulled From City Council Docket (San Diego)
A resolution endorsing Gay Pride Week in San Diego was abruptly pulled from the City Council docket Monday afternoon.

The decision to pull the resolution from the docket was made this weekend by organizers of the annual Pride Parade and Festival. Monday's moves and countermoves by supporters and critics of the event included a protest by about 50 Christians at council chambers, a defense of the event by acting Mayor Tony Atkins and the decision to pull the resolution from the docket at the 11th hour.

"They have gay pornography booths," said Christian activist James Hartline. "They have a whole tent devoted to S&M leather sex and all the other things that go along with that. They have pornography stores walking down the parade."

<snip>

"And what is being celebrated? Homosexuality -- which was correctly diagnosed and treated as a psychiatric illness until 1973," said festival critic Stephanie Hooper.

More bullshit from people who take the "fun" out and add an excess of "mental" to fundamentalism. No doubt there concern over S&M lead them to boycott "Passion of the Christ" as well. :spank:

1. Given the choice
I'd rather see a booth with assless leather chaps than trucks with giant posters of aborted fetuses.

They need to clean their own house.

3. The evolution of the human mind...
helped us to determine that homosexuality is NOT a psychiatric illness...

Maybe this is why fundies don't believe in evolution

4. How ignorant and petty.....

That being said, I have to be honest and admit that just as much as pride events fulfill an important touchstone for unity and, well, pride, they tend to be self-defeating.

I think they also provide us with a great opportunity to shoot ourselves in the foot and provide ample fodder for zealous maniacs who love to hold up the festive antics as "proof" of our "moral terpitude."

We give them the ammunition they need and then wonder why they load it in their Christo-fascist fear-of-God guns and fire.

That would be just as absurd as some of the more outrageous displays typically inherent in pride festivities.

A happy medium would go a long way. The gay pride organizers have a long way to go in understanding the value of positive PR to the wider American community. Until they do, there will always be shining examples for the RW loonies to hold up and say "See how depraved these people are?"

It's not enough that WE know that's not the case. But hey, if you want your civil rights eroded by the politically active Christo-fascists just because you think some guy should have the freedom to march down the street in a leather jockstrap waving a 13" dildo for all the world to see, I guess that's your perogative. It's not mine, thank you very much.

Simultaneously waving rainbow flags and dildos isn't going to get us anywhere. That's what's called a mixed message, and mixed messages tend to get drowned out. All I'm saying is that even a small degree of self-censorship in terms of behaviour at these events would go a long way in not looking like the enemy to our enemies.

7. Well said!!
It's amazing that these same evangelicals embrace many S/M philosophies in the administration of their daily "christ-like" lives. . .gay San Diegans should remember this when the next religious "conference" comes to town and the organizers want the group to be welcomed by a resolution.
