Everyone has spotted a hot hunk or gorgeous girl at the supermarket, but some people are too shy to strike up a conversation.

Now Whole Foods Market on Ponce de Leon Avenue is ready to help break the ice.

On July 27, the chain’s Midtown store kicks off a monthly gay-inclusive singles night designed to encourage mixing and mingling, says Darrah Horgan, marketing specialist at Whole Foods Midtown.

“A lot of singles know the supermarket is the place to see and be seen,” Horgan says. “We wanted to capitalize on that and try something different than what your typical grocery store would do.”

"the supermarket is the place to see and be seen" ... Say what? All this time I've been hanging out in dark, smoky bars when I could have been cruising the supermarket using lines like "Is that a cucumber in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?"

Unfortunately, the nearest whole foods market is about 40 minutes away and would probably never do a gay single's shopping night.

Around here we call them "Homo Depot" since there are so many gays and lesbians shopping (and working) there. ... Plus it has the added advantage of allowing you to find that ever-illusive partner who is "handy around the house." ;-)

since I've been working on some projects at home. I guess I'm not going at the right time though.. maybe I'll try Sunday afternoon while I'm still dressed up after church.

3. Do You Ever Strike Up Conversations in the Supermarket?

I don't.

I think the best way to meet people is to go to clubs or social gatherings where people are having conversations. If one group doesn't have anyone interesting, try the next.

5. I'm always talking to people in the store

The classic scenario is cute guy stopping to ask "how do I know if this fruit is ripe?" or asking what aisle something is in.

Plus you can comment on the person's purchases. Two weeks ago, the guy ahead of me was buying strawberries, whipped cream, wine, and lotion. (alright, I didn't comment on that so much as snicker, but you see my point).

My deli guys are my buddies - the new one commutes an hour to work at a grocery store (!) because there are no jobs in his town, and he appreciates good humus, and warns me away from the bad stuff.

Unfortunately, I'm a giant dork in the store ... "Uh, excuse me, could you reach those tampons for me? I'm too short. The ... uh - no not those ones, the double super extra massive absorbent ones over there" or (last week) "Uh, I'm REALLY sorry but I just accidentally knocked over your entire display in aisle 3, I guess someone should fix that, I don't know how it goes. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry."

Their singles night will be quite the ego boost for regular folk who go shopping that night without realizing it's singles night, anyhow. :)

7. Oh, my gosh. This brings back one of my favorite memories...

I was working as a stock clerk at a supermarket during the summer break in the college town where I was attending school. If you've ever lived in a college town during the summer, you know how casual and lazy summers can be. Anyway, one day, coming my way down the aisle was the most gorgeous, GORGEOUS frat boy, probably 6', blonde, no body hair and beefy like Michaelangelo's David, dressed in nothing more than a pair of loose short, shorts. O. M. G. I couldn't take my eyes off of him. He even teased me, standing in the aisle, stopping to look at the jelly, letting me look him up and down. The funny part is that he was there with a girl (his girlfriend?) and she didn't seem to think anything of my looks. I got so flustered, I hit my head on one of those coupon dispensers that hang out into the aisle. Turned beet red, but he was worth it.

8. This reminds me of when the local Safeway Market chain instituted

a new rule for employees--they had to greet and SMILE at every customer they encountered, no matter what they were doing, including while stocking shelves, pushing a dust broom, etc. Employees started to complain about the rule to management, as they started to get handed phone numbers and requests for dates.

I never thought of the market as cruisy, although I know plenty of people who say it can be. I'll have to visit the local "Whole Paycheck Foods" which has a visual merchandiser and display artist. That has to be a good sign!
