TOPEKA — A push to prohibit gays and lesbians from adopting children in Kansas appears to have been put off for the foreseeable future.
The idea was tentatively scheduled to be discussed this week by a panel of lawmakers, but the chairwoman of the Joint Committee on Children’s Issues said she had more important things to talk about.
“I have a full agenda,” said Rep. Willa DeCastro, a Wichita Republican. A prohibition on gay adoption “didn’t make the cut with this chairman.”
The idea of prohibiting gays and lesbians from adopting children came from Rep. Steve Huebert, a Valley Center Republican, who said he wanted the state to investigate the proposal. Legislative leaders sent his request to DeCastro’s committee, which considers issues affecting children’s health and safety when the Legislature is not in session.
