(Fort Lauderdale, Florida) A member of the Broward School District's diversity committee who said gays "are trying to mess with our kids' minds and introduce all kinds of activities in the name of tolerance,'' has resigned.
Steve Kane made the remark during a May committee meeting that was considering the use in schools of the video We Are Family that features SpongeBob SquarePants and other cartoon characters.
The video promotes diversity and shows a variety of cartoon families but does not specifically mention gays. The committee ended up rejecting the video saying it could lead children to be less wary of stangers.
Kane's remarks led to a call by Equality Florida for it supporters to attend a late July meeting of the full board. More than 100 people showed up. Although the board upheld the committee decision it publicly distanced itself from Kane, a local conservative radio talk show host. (story)
