New York governor to propose legalizing same-sex marriage

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Gov. David Paterson will announce plans Thursday to introduce same-sex marriage legislation in the state Assembly, according to an assemblyman who was asked to be present for the announcement.

"The governor's office called me and asked if I would stand with the governor," said Micah Z. Kellner, a state assemblyman from Manhattan. "I said I will be thrilled to stand with the governor when he makes this announcement."

Because of its previous success in the Assembly, the bill is expected to pass there, but it will need 32 votes to pass in the state Senate.

To be clear, what he did was much better than smugly proclaiming some religious excuse to promote discrimination, standing side by side with venom spouting hate preachers who call for acts of war against their neighbors, like some people we all know.

New York now recognizes same-sex marriages performed out-of-state, and the General Assembly did pass the current bill by significant majorities. Marriage equality in New York is now in our sight and will be a reality sooner than later, IMHO. Gov. Patterson's leadership has gone a great way in getting us this far, and he pursued this change in the law because he knew it was the right thing to do, his personal political future be damned.

I sure wish another chief executive that I could mention had the courage to do the same.

I dearly appreciate Governor Patterson's support of Same Sex Marriage and I will always be thankful of him for that. That being said, however, I still think he is doing a pretty lousy job as Gov with the rest of state matters. I got nothing against the guy personally, I just hope the Dems run someone else for governor.
