Walton native works to form gay support group

A Walton man is not giving up his efforts to establish a gay and lesbian group at Seton Hall University despite a New Jersey Appeals Court decision dismissing his lawsuit.

Romeo said he submitted an application Nov. 13, 2003, to form TRUTH (Trust, Respect, Unity at The Hall) listing 18 members, including himself. The group’s aim was to oppose discrimination and serve as a support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and supportive heterosexual students, according to the application.

Romeo said Wednesday that he knew he needed to start TRUTH after he was the victim of a hate crime during his second month at Seton Hall.

"I was coming back to my room after a hockey game," Romeo said. "I found the door to my room, the walls around it and the floor all covered with the words ’faggot,’ ’queer’ and ’homo’ written in red permanent marker and red paint."
