Florida Anti-Gay Amendment Moves Forward
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 10:02 AM by dwickham

An umbrella organization of conservative Christian political groups is expected to submit 61,000 signatures to the Florida Supreme Court this week - the first step in getting a proposed amendment to ban same-sex marriage and civil unions on the 2006 ballot.

Under Florida law the signatures are required before the wording on the initiative can be approved. If the signatures are proven valid and the court agrees to the wording, the organization - Florida4Marriage - can begin collecting the 611,000 eligible signatures to put the question to voters.

Florida4Marriage is working with the Christian Coalition of Florida and Liberty Counsel, a conservative Christian law firm that is involved in fighting gay marriage and domestic partner benefits in a number of states.

another reason NOT to visit Florida if this passes

1. The good news is
I don't think this anti rights amendment will have the impact on the overall results (i.e. the Senate Race) as it did in 2004. I have relatives in Florida and shudder to think how they will vote on this.

2. Florida stuck in the past!!!!
Floridians as a whole are good people , but there are far to many residents of this state who do not consider this home. Once you get twenty miles from the coastal residents of this state you might as well be in rural Georgia or Alabama. Bible beating, gay hating, good christian folk. Better known as frightened, ignorant Republicans.

Yup, sadly -- very sadly -- I was correct way back when . . . I was in law school many years ago. After studying the laws of the various states across this county, I came to the very sad conclusion that there were some very reactionary state laws, most of which were clustered in The South or the Bible Belt area. Overall, these laws are, e.g., family law, real estate law, consumer protection law, state securities law, state corporate law, criminal law, and individual rights law. There are more but essentially that's the core.

Overall, these 3 states have the worst of the worst laws on the their books (legislature), the worst enforcement (police) of those laws on their books, and the worst judicial system to interpret those laws:

1. Texas (being the worst of the 3)

2. Oklahoma (north Texas)

3. Florida

Over and over throughout the years, these same states come up again and again demonstrating their inability to enter the 20th century. They are mired in time pre-Civil War. And we all suffer as a result because it is this "culture" which George Walker Bush and Company want to promulgate throughout the rest of the country and beyond.
