Sign of the times: My 82 year old mother, who came from a rather sheltered background,

was asking me the other day to explain the difference between someone who is transgendered and someone who is a transvestite and someone who is gay. She honestly didn't know the specific meaning of each term. She also went on to discuss the scandal of states that prohibited marriages between people of different races into the 70's. I may not be explaining myself properly here, but this very old lady is now seeing people from the LGBT community as people and not as sinners, and she is making the connection in her own mind between the laws against mixed race marriages and against same sex marriages.

She wasn't judgmental about anyone, just wasn't up to speed on these things, so wanted them explained to her. I doubt that things like this came up much when she was growing up, in a small town in NE NY, in the early 1900s... ;)

12. I don't know that I can say my grandma wa s abig supporter of gay marriage because it

wasn't really an issue when she was alive, but I do know that she always said that using your religion (and she meant Christianity) to judge someone wasn't very Christian of you. She said she just wished people would let others live their lives how they wanted to. It isn't all of our business anyway. I have to think that if she were alive, she would support equality even if she didn't really understand why people live how they do.

13. the elderly tend to look around and figure out

that life and companionship and having a family are almost always about a lot more than the mechanics of sex.

Pity our younger dickbrained fellow Americans can't figure it out.

14. I think older people ahve become accustomed to change and that the younger people

are already there. I think it's the people in the middle, say 40 to 60 , who are the problem.
