James Mitchell, the stage and screen actor best known for playing tycoon Palmer Cortland for 30 years on the daytime soap opera All My Children, died Friday in Los Angeles. He was 89.

The actor, who was survived by his longtime partner Albert Wolsky, retired from All My Children in 2009 but returned for a brief appearance earlier this month on the show’s 40th anniversary special. Mitchell died of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, complicated by pneumonia, according to a rep for Disney.

Mitchell began his career as a dancer in a number of Broadway musicals including Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon and Carousel. In addition to his work on All My Children, Mitchell taught drama and movement for actors at both Yale University and Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mitchell received seven Daytime Emmy nominations for his work on All My Children. Mitchell never publicly talked about being gay, but his relationship with Wolsky was acknowledged and discussed on several soap blogs.

6. One Life to Live has a current storyline with gay characters

Not that I'm into soap operas, but it's hard to avoid exposure while being laid off and having a wife who watches both AMC & OLTL. I know Agnes Nixon created both soaps, but I don't know how much of the writing is shared between the two shows.

he was a great character on the show....here`s one guy who will be known by all the good things he has done.

5. I literally grew up watching AMC

I was born in 1970, and my Mom watched it religiously and still does now that she is retired. Mr. Mitchell was so fun to watch. He will be missed.
