Oklahoma man sues to use “IM GAY” on license plate

A gay college student is suing an Oklahoma state agency over the denial of a personalized license plate.

Keith Kimmel, 28, sued the Oklahoma Tax Commission last year for denying his request for a “IM GAY” license plate. The commission said an internal rule prevent the use of license plates that “may be offensive to the general public.”

“I want to tell people who I am and what I am. I’m proud of it. I’m openly gay. I’m not hiding,” Kimmel told The Oklahoman. “What better way to tell everybody than to put it on the back of a car?”

Kimmel points out that license plates such as STR8FAN and STR8SXI are OK. “They defended using ‘straight sexy.’ … They didn’t think that one was inappropriate but yet ‘I’m gay’ is. I think it’s kind of a double standard,” said Kimmel.

Kimmel said he will appeal if he loses.
