South African education officials are looking into rumors that an all-girls boarding school closed a dormitory after discovering students involved in lesbian relationships, the BBC reported.
According to reports, 27 students were expelled after two girls were caught kissing and said other students were involved in lesbian affairs. The dormitory that shut down held 300 students. The school is in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province.
Some groups are claiming the school overreacted, the BBC reported.
“Expelling children or anyone for such a reason is discriminatory and our Constitution states it clearly that people should not be discriminated against because of their sexual orientation,” Childline CEO Dumisile Nala told national broadcaster SABC.
South Africa is the only African nation that allows same-sex marriage and protects gays from discrimination.
