Roseanne Barr: marie osmonds poor gay son killed himself

because he had been told how wrong and how sick he was every day of his life by his church and the people in it. Calling that "depression" is a lie!
Yet the Osmonds still talk lovingly about their church, saying nothing about its extremely anti-gay Crusade. Marie also has a gay daughter! Hey, I want her and all the gay kids in the world to know that they are just fine being gay and that they deserve love and respect instead of insults and rebuke! I have gay people in my family and my circle of friends and I am kicking bigot ass and taking names!
That is how its done in my religion---(I have my own religion that I made up for myself and it is a great religion that actually works and respects facts and not fantasy!)
Gerald Lund one of the ex church apostles has three gay kids himself.
Yet, even though the people they say they love the most in all of their public displays and speeches (THEIR KIDS AND FAMILY!!) are gay,-- their own children,for crying out loud- these people cannot find the christian decency and compassion within themselves to stop their hypocritical gay bashing!!
How sickening. I know so many mormon kids who were gay and committed suicide, and I just cannot and will not stay quiet in order to not offend bigots anymore. It is all so terribly depressing.
Marie please don't talk about how your faith in your church has helped you get through this one! Please get some integrity and tell that church of yours that you will leave it and stop giving it ten percent of your money if they don't stop trying to destroy your kids' and all gay people's civil rights and dreams and hopes!!
G-d is trying to use you for something good and this is your opportunity! Your church is wrong and on the wrong wrong wrong side of things! Get as vocal about that as you are about your diet. G-d bless you too, Marie.
Take a hard look at the facts now as you use this very sad time for introspection, healing growth and prayer, and become a strong symbol for loving mothers who make no apologies for hatred against their own kids!

I don't know that this is the time. It's been less than a week since the death and I think it's right to give Ms Osmond the space to grieve.

As to whether Ms Osmond's son was depressed, I'd rather leave that to a diagnostician rather than Ms Barr.

6. I think I've heard he had a history of drug/alcohol abuse

and was in a rehab when he was 16. That can be a result of the self-loathing the LDS church teaches LGBT people, but it can also be a form of self-medication because of his depression. Or it can be both.

needing to shut up and stick to entertaining, I can kind of see their point.

In this particular instance, Roseanne is assuming that

A) Marie Osmand's son was gay
B) Marie and her family shunned him
C) He killed himself because of this.

There's absolutely no proof of any of this. There's not even any proof that the Mormon Church is at fault--there are a lot of straight, non-Mormon teenagers out there struggling with depression out there, and some do kill themselves even though their parents do everything they can to help them.

But EVEN IF THERE WAS, this is the last sort of thing the mother of a dead child wants to hear immediately after the fact from a total stranger. Roseanne is liberal, yes, but she frequently writes without knowledge, without understanding, without tact, and now without compassion.

Fuck Roseanne.

Someone defending the indefensible. The reality of being enmeshed in the Mormon Church and culture would be burden enough to make any rational free-thinking kid pursue an escape of some sort although perhaps not suicide. But for many, being gay would probably be the final unconquerable hurdle. Whatever the circumstances in this particular case, if the Church believes what it says about its power to influence lives it has to take the lion's share of the credit for another death.

17. It's Not a Question of Timing When Calling Bigots On Their Bigotry.

Quite frankly, whether Marie Osmond's son killed himself because he was gay or not is incidental. Many gay children who were raised mormon HAVE killed themselves, and those people who continue to fund this evil cult with their money and support it with their kind words are indirect contributors to those deaths. Marie Osmond chose the cult over the lives of gay mormon children, as do those who call themselves catholics, and most other christian denominations. As such, it's hard to find sympathy for her. She deserves a big heaping helping of the grief she contributed to.

I wish there WAS a heaven, so Osmond's son could at last find love and acceptance. But at least he's forever free from murdering religious cults.
