Governor Schwarzenegger do? Sign the same-sex marriage bill into law for California? Veto the bill? And I don't believe there's enough votes to over-ride such a veto. Or will he merely let the bill sit on his Governor's desk and do nothing thereby allowing the bill to kick-into law by itself?
Hmmmmmmmm . . . Arnie's not been very consistent on same-sex marriage, having jumped all over the place about it . . . yes, no, then, gee, if the CA Supreme Court says it's okay then same-sex marriage is okay or if the "people say it's okay then it's okay with me." But nothing about what if the state legislature dumped a bill on his desk.
BREAKING NEWS ~ California Assembly passes bill to legalize same-sex marriage
Bernard Hibbitts, Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at 10:50 PM ET
(JURIST NEWS) AP is reporting that the California Assembly has narrowly passed a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in the state. AB 849, the
Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act (Equality California materials) was
approved by the state Senate (JURIST report) last Thursday, and
now goes to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for his signature, although it's not yet clear whether he will sign it or not. The bill, if signed into law, would be the first state law to legalize same-sex marriage and not just civil unions; same-sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts, but that was the result of a judicial decision. Gay rights group Equality California has issued a
press release on the Assembly bill passage. Gay 365.com has
more.
