In the last six weeks before Election Day 2008, 687,000 California voters changed their minds and opposed gay marriage, according to a new analysis on the votes behind Proposition 8- California’s ballot measure that banned gay marriage.
Polling predicted the outcome of the election to be much closer than it was. Lead analyst David Fleischer of the LA Times attributed the loss in California to this change in voters’ opinions. Over 500,000 of those 687,000 who changed minds were parents with children under the age of 18 living at home.
The ballot measure passed by 600,000 votes.
Why the sudden change in voters’ opinions?
Yes on 8 started running ads directly targeted at parents. In one ad, a girl runs cheerfully to her mother and says, “Mom! Guess what I learned in school today! I learned how a prince married a prince and how I can marry a princess!”
