Pro Prop 8 Bigot (and self-professed "liberal Democrat") laments blowback from his bigotry

Oh poor, poor David Blankenhorn. All he did was get on the witness stand and publicly advocate for discrimination...and now he's shocked to be losing friends over it. After all, he supports civil unions - isn't that enough? :cry:

(A wake-up call to all those who call themselves liberal yet are desperate to find a "third way" instead of supporting marriage equality)

While Blankenhorn backed civil unions for gay and lesbian couples in 2007, he gained greater attention this year when he testified in favor of Prop 8 during the federal trial over that 2008 amendment to California’s constitution that banned same-sex marriage. That more public stance has cost him.

“I’m losing friends, being told I’m on the wrong side of history, I’m like Bull Connor,” he said, referring to the top Birmingham, Alabama law enforcement official who in the 1960s used police dogs and fire hoses to attack pro-integration protesters. Blankenhorn has been mocked in the gay blogosphere.

“This is the single worst experience I have had in my public life,” he said of joining the debate over same-sex marriage. “I dreaded getting into it... I tried to avoid it for a long time. I feel like the issue hunted me down.”

Since founding his institute just over 20 years ago, the “liberal Democrat,” as he called himself in a 2008 Los Angeles Times editorial supporting Prop 8, has been an advocate for strengthening families and promoting fatherhood. He has generally not commented on gay issues.

This fool goes on to defend the likes of Maggie Gallagher, who sits on the board of his think tank, insisting that she's not the same as James Dobson. Bottom line, if you are against marriage equality you are a bigot. Period. Deal with it, Mr. Blankenhorn.

11. I will admit I used to think civil unions were okay...like 10 years ago.

I was only in my early 20's and had a lot of growing up to do. It just is not the same as what I have....not the same as marriage. You are not getting the same full rights as married people.
