NJ court avoiding gay marriage

The New Jersey Supreme Court may have avoided confronting gay marriage out of fear of Governor Chris Christie.

The Republican governor of New Jersey opposes same-sex marriage and some NJ legislators speculate that members of the Supreme Court are not pushing for marriage equality because they fear not being reappointed by Christie.

The NJ Supreme Court does not give interviews according to The Star Ledger, but Winnie Comfort, a court spokesperson said, “There won’t be any comment. Of course, people are free to speculate. There is nothing we can do about that.”

Christie ousted Justice John Wallace, the court’s only African-American judge, which sparked the speculation.

1. Christie wasn't even governor yet when the court could have legalized gay marriage

There was already a court case in New Jersey a few years ago, the court ruled that the state had to give all the rights and benefits to gays, but left it up to legislature to decide within 90 days of the ruling to adopt gay marriage or civil unions. I know because I live right next door to New Jersey, and hear their local news stories on my news channels.

I don't think Christie was even running for governor yet at the time.
