Peter, Paul & Mary To NOM: Stop Playing Our Song At Your Hate Rallies

The Courage Campaign reports that sixties folk music star Peter Yarrow is NOT happy that NOM has been playing Peter, Paul & Mary's cover of This Land Is Your Land at NOM's hate rallies. Yarrow has sent Brian Brown a cease and desist letter. I bet NOM doesn't even know that Woody Guthrie wrote This Land as an counterpoint to God Bless America.

1. This gave me chills...
Peter, Paul, and RIP Mary... these fine folks were on the cutting edge of the civil rights movement, and they have NOT wavered one tiny bit in all these years.

Best to you, here and in spirit.

My baby girl roots... I've seen Joan Baez twice in the past month, and I hope to see her again next month. I'm really loving these sage folkies who walked the path of freedom long before many of us could even walk.

3. Let 'em play "Don't Think Twice".
Seems more fitting, somehow.

6. Actually, considering how many of the really rabid anti-gay warriors eventually end up coming out...

...as gay, maybe they'd be better off licensing The
Kink's "Lola" or Harry Nilson's "Everybody's Talking"
(the title theme from Midnight Cowboy).

Or Maybe Lou Reed's "Walk with a Wide Stance", err,
"Walk on the Wild Side"?

8. How ignorant to co-opt inclusiveness for cruel exclusivity.
Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

11. I met Peter Yarrow once....
I've met & spent time with lots of celebs -- celebrity doesn't impress me in the least. As a matter of fact, I've been around some who were total assholes (Danny Kaye & a couple of sitting US legislators among others). When I met Peter, I have to admit to initially being a little tongue-tied and I do believe there was a tad of tear welling going on. :P He was pretty much everything I imagined him to be when I was growing up listening to their music and joining in on Vietnam protests during my early teen years (I had cool parents, at least when it came to civil rights & Vietnam): Peter was warm & wonderful. I guess NOM feels free to co-opt PP&M's & Woody Guthrie's civil rights music in the same way Glen Beck is trying to co-opt THE March on Washington. Both fail miserably.

12. In the fall of 2003 - Iowa caucuses warming' up...
I'm sittin' in the Waveland diner in Des Moines on a Saturday morning with some other ground pounder volunteers from the neighborhood. We were nobody special, just locals trying to get it together and make the world a better place by tryin' to get Bushco run out of office.

In walks this kindly old balding dude with wild white hair, carrying a guitar - said his name was Peter and had heard that some volunteers met here on Saturday mornings and wanted to know what he could do to help. We introduced ourselves, I said, didn't catch your last name, man.

"Yarrow, Peter Yarrow", he responded. The name sounded vaguely familiar, and he sat down next to me as conversation returned back to what we needed to do that day. Then it hit hit me, all of a sudden...this is friggin' Peter Yarrow from Peter, Paul & Mary. He was there to help us and his friend JK. No entourage, no fanfare, no ego...just ready to pound ground and help out any way he could.

This is the man Peter Yarrow...
