a REAL dyed in the wool conservative does not WANT government to dictate personal choices in matters such as marriage.

6. Not at all
The number one reason why bigotry exists is that people don't have any counterexamples that would adjust their perceptions.

I have seen quite a few conservative, religious people become P-FLAG supporters once one of their children or grandchildren or a beloved niece or godson comes out to them as gay. Not as many as I would like, sad to say, but still quite a few.

Once you find out that someone you love or respect is gay/atheist/Republican/other, you are forced to change your attitudes towards all people who are gay/atheist/Republican/other, if only a little bit.

3. (P)ricky will be all over this: "Well, he is from Massachusetts"
Sorry, Massachusetts for my idiot Senator. NE conservatives are not of the same breed as theocratic-neocons of today.

4. Oh, we have a few neocons running around here.

Not many, but they are around.
