MASSACHUSETTS: Catholic High Schoolers Rally In Support Of Lesbian Dean
MASSACHUSETTS: Catholic High Schoolers Rally In Support Of Lesbian Dean

Students at Cathedral High School in Springfield, Massachusetts took to the streets this weekend to express their disgust over the forced resignation of their dean, Christine Judd, who was asked to leave the school after 12 years because she had married a woman over the summer break.

“Without being specific to this matter, it should be clear that all employees of our Catholic schools are made aware of our policies and regulations,” said diocesan spokesman Mark E. Dupont. “This includes language that clearly states that whenever by public example, an employee engages in or espouses conduct which contravenes the doctrine and teaching of the Catholic Church, that employee may be subject to disciplinary action. To do otherwise would be in contradiction to the values we believe in and are teaching in these same schools,” he said.

Watch this clip of these great kids. It'll give you hope.

2. People don't believe me when I state that the Church is not
the bishops (or at least, not only the bishops!)

The hierarchy and the Church are very close to going in two separate directions.

3. So true!
My fiance is a former Catholic priest who, after many years, had the opportunity to go back and meet with some of the men who went through the seminary with him in Ireland where he is visiting right now. Part of an email he sent me last night referring to the priests he met with says: "These are the grassroots Catholics (Nicholas) Krystof talks about. They respond to the misery they encounter and ignore the stupidity from Rome; they just haven't time to get involved in both. One other fellow has been working for several years with traumatized refugees from the Sudan, and getting EU governments and NGOs to help. A lot of the talk was about the poor from as diverse places as Papua-New Guinea to Dublin. It was impressive." One priest, he said, got a degree in agricultural science and is temporarily back from Africa where he has been putting his knowledge to work helping the poor. He said also, "Everyone was so very open and accepting of my 'heretical' change... it was both touching and healing."
These priests are the real Catholics, the ones out there trying to do good-- not the ones sitting behind walls judging everyone and everything. The hierarchy are completely out of touch and have absolutely distorted the real Christian message.

4. Why this OP doesn't have 100+ recs is a mystery to me.
Isn't this the sort of development we *want* to see?

Young people rising above their own political/religious conditioning to confront and condemn a genuine moral/ethical outrage.
