Gay student club under fire in Madison County (Ga.)

Some 60 students at Madison County High School near Athens formed a gay-straight alliance despite opposition from parents who say the group is part of a “political or social agenda.”

The gay-straight alliance started last month despite opposition shown at a recent school board meeting that drew more than 100 attendees, according to local newspaper accounts.

Madison County Assistant Superintendent Allen McCannon said the club was formed after it met all legal and school requirements.

“The Board of Education does not sanction or advocate for clubs, but we support the principal,” McCannon said. “I’m in favor of treating all students fairly and equally. And that’s what’s being done.”

I was just at my local PFLAG meeting. At least one of the members is concerned that, if a certain wacky Religious Wrong school board candidate gets on the school board, the local Gay-Straight Alliance clubs on the high school campuses will be threatened.

So, we will try to ensure that does not happen.
