Today, we remember trans people who have not only been killed due to transphobia, but the intersecting forces of sexism, racism, homophobia, ableism, classism, and sex worker hatred.
There have been 108 documented murders of trans people, or those perceived to be trans, this year. This does not include those whose deaths were never reported. This does not include suicides, the missing, those who died because they were afraid to seek treatment from a transphobic medical system, and many others.
Most of those murdered were trans women. Many were sex workers. Many were women of colour. Some were homeless.
Today, we remember Brenda, Wanchai Tongwijit, Mariah Malina Qualls, Estrella (Jose Angel) Venegas, Wong, Myra Chanel Ical, Derya Y., Fevzi Yener, Dino Curi Huansi, Amanda Gonzalez-Andujarm, Toni Alston, Ashley Santiago Ocasio, Azra, Chanel, Angie González Oquendo, Sandy Woulard, Roy Antonio Jones III, Imperia Gamaniel Parson, Gypsy, Victoria Carmen White, Justo Luis González García, Irem, Stacey Lee, Emanuelly Colaço Taborda, 6 unidentified gender-variant or trans people, and many others.
Today, we must not only remember, but work for change.
