Why you shouldn't give to the Salvation Army this holiday season

Why you shouldn't give to the Salvation Army this holiday season

In case you've forgotten, the holiday season is fast upon us. That means the Salvation Army bell ringers will be out in full force dunning shoppers for donations meant to help the needy and destitute. Unfortunately, the Salvation Army won't assist everyone - only those they deem sufficiently worthy.

While many think of the group as just another charity, in truth the group is a religious sect that is notoriously anti-gay; you shouldn't give to the Salvation Army this holiday season if you support gay rights.

When a former boyfriend and I were homeless, the Salvation Army refused to help us unless we broke up and left the "sinful homosexual lifestyle" behind. We slept on the street and they didn't help when we declined to break up at their insistence. I've seen the discrimination the Salvation Army preaches first hand.

Need more examples? Check out the video after the jump for a laundry list of anti-gay policies and positions the Salvation Army has taken. You'll probably be shocked - and you definitely won't put any more coins in those big red buckets.

1. It's wrong of them to do that, but on the other hand they were the BEST agency helping fire victims.
When the Red Cross was doing nothing to help wildfire victims locally except giving out blankets, Salvation ARmy in the 1st 24 hours was giving people gift cards to grocery stores, hardware stores, and also giving out clothes, diapers, furniture, all kinds of stuff. They were the only charity locally that would allow the public to donate goods and food, not just money.

The red cross collected most money donated locally, then didn't give it out to victims. It was a huge scandal at the time.

Every fire victim I interviewed said that of all the places they went, Salvation Army treated them the best. That included some gay people at the time.

2. Is there a GLBT organization to donate to
that will step in and take up the slack, or is the purpose just to screw people living in poverty?

3. If they did this to interracial couples would your reaction be the same?

If, so then at least you're consistent. If not, then why not?

5. OH dsc...
Didn't you know that all gay people are rich? Only straights are poor.

11. Of course, the SA is the only organization that helps poor people.
If those damn queers boycott them, the poor will starve! Evil gays! Evil!

4. Thank you for posting this, I became aware of the SA's anti-gay agenda
when they made that deal with the Bush administration. I have not dropped a single coin in their kettles since then, and have made sure that anybody I'm with knows about their history and doesn't donate either.

9. So many other options
By giving to them one is making a choice. It's unthinkable any progressive would donate to them. Personally my giving policy has lately been to donate as locally as possible - shelters, food banks, and free clinics.
