Family Research Council Labeled 'Hate Group' By SPLC Over Anti-Gay Rhetoric

The Family Research Council is perhaps the most prominent voice in conservative social politics and the hosts of an annual rite of passage for many Republicans who hope to run for president. And now, FRC is on the same Southern Poverty Law Center list of hate groups as the Ku Klux Klan.

The SPLC gave the Family Research Council the designation due to anti-gay speech from its leaders, which the SPLC says includes calls for gay men and lesbians to be imprisoned.

Labeling the Family Research Council a hate group puts one of Washington's most powerful social issues advocates into the company of groups like the Nation of Islam and the now mostly defunct Aryan Nations in the eyes of the SPLC, which tracks 932 active hate groups in the U.S.

Groups are labeled hate groups by the SPLC -- which made a name for itself by using civil lawsuits to severely weaken the KKK and other white supremacist groups -- when they "have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics," according to the group's website.

For the Family Research Council, which hosts the annual Values Voter Summit in Washington -- an event which this year drew presidential hopefuls like Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee -- the designation comes thanks to the group's standing at the forefront of opposition to gay marriage and open gay and lesbian service in the military.

2. The details that are in there are absolutely vile, why this didn't happen sooner is a mystery

Imagine if someone said that Jews or blacks needed to be "exported" and that they will rape you in your sleep. That person or group would get marginalized so fast that it would make their head spin.

This group gets away with saying it about gays and has access to Washington. That should be at least just a little bit unsettling to any sane person.

About time they get called a hate group, no matter how friendly they try to name themselves, by putting 'Family' in their name, they're still a hate group.

5. FRC has made a fortune gay bashing. The irony is so much of their leadership's homosexuals.

FRC has made fanning homophobia in the American culture the only thing they have ever stood for since their inception. They are obsessed with homosexuality. The male leaders in that organization have either been exposed as hypocritical self-loathing homosexuals or are like Gary Bauer, who is either a very effiminate heterosexual or is a closeted, biblethumping homosexual who is desperately trying to prove to his wife and family that he's not what he clearly appears to be.

This is a hate group by any measure.

The SPLC, one of America's finest organizations, deserves praise for stating the long-overdue obvious. They are a hate group, engage in hate speech and hate crimes.
