Alan Cumming says Rupert Everett and Richard Chamberlain are “irresponsible” for suggesting that actors hoping to one day be leading men should stay in the closet, saying they should “think about a little gay boy in Wisconsin.”

The star of The Good Wife was referring to comments by the actors suggesting Hollywood isn’t ready for a gay leading man. Chamberlain told The Advocate he “wouldn’t advise a gay leading man-type actor to come out,” while Everett told the BBC he “never got a job” in Hollywood after coming out.

"I think it's so mean-spirited," Cumming said. "If you're living a lie, that's not healthy, and I think it is really irresponsible of and Rupert to say these things."

When asked if he thought they made a point, Cumming responded: "But it's not about your work. It's about how you exist as a person in the world, and the idea that your work is more important than you as a person is a horrible, horrible message. I always think about a little gay boy in Wisconsin or a little lesbian in Arkansas seeing someone like me, and if I cannot be open in my life, how on earth can they? Anyway, it's an academic question: how can you know ? Some people get less work than others and it has nothing to do with sexuality."

actors should never take on roles like million dollar baby, boys don't cry, brokeback mountain, etc

it's just stupid.

if a leading man or woman is -- let's say in the george clooney, angelina jolie range of charisma and sex appeal - who is going to care?

oh there will always be stupid detractors -- but sex appeal + good work wins every time.

2. If "gay" means "homosexual", like the dictionary says

and "homosexual" means "someone who practices homosexuality; having a sexual attraction to persons of the same sex" then this makes no sense.

All kids are sexually curious. That doesn't make them gay or straight.

Why do you need a dictionary definition?

In fact, did you ever "try" gay sex? Are you gay? Are you heterosexual? Are you bi? When did you decide?

Crap. For some reason I find your post offensive. Am I misreading it?

Most people who are gay know that they are gay without "experimenting" which is not to say they don't try to be straight because of those who try to dehumanize them.

Kids don't come out of the womb understanding sexuality, or knowing what "gay" or "straight" means. They really don't (I know, I have two).

Ascribing any kind of sexuality (beyond curiosity) to young kids strikes me as perverse.

The fact that you have 2 kids does not give you the knowledge of when a kid knows they are gay or not.

I don't have any kids. Just 13 nieces and nephews and 8 greats. Obviously, I couldn't have any knowledge of young kids.:sarcasm:

BTW, one of the great nephews wanted to be a girl when he was 2. He is now 7 and still wants to be a girl. His favorite toy is Barbie and he likes to play princess. He still doesn't know what sex is but I guess he knows he isn't like the other boys. (And one of the lovely parents of a kid he played with already called him gay and won't let his kid play with my nephew anymore.) And his parents are one of the few remaining Catholics in my family. They make him wear a crew cut and Superman jammies. And despite trying to keep him away from the Barbies, they are still his favorite toy.

BTW, I also knew I was a lesbian before I had sex with anyone, and it wasn't the sex that made me that way. It is innate. And the fact that I tried to be something else didn't make me straight.

It is perverse to think that concern over the self esteem of children, equates to sexualizing children. It does not. It is perverse to think GLBT's should hide who they are- or pretend to not be who they are
because others don't like it. That is perverse.
