My chickie has two mommies
Two of my hens plopped themselves down on the same clutch of eggs and shared nesting duty. Only one egg hatched. Now the two hens are taking care of the chick, guarding it from the other chickens and me, showing it how to scratch grain and where the water can is. To top it off, the chick is a different breed from either bird, so it's adopted!

2. Want to drive a chicken mommie crazy?
Have a brooding hen hatch some duck eggs. She will care for the adopted ducklings like her own, but the first time they spot a puddle or pan of water they can swim in, instinctually they will jump into the water. Momma hen has a fit until she realizes they won't drown. Saw it happen with ours.

7. Not one comment about two females raising a child together being unnatural?

8. All our chickens are hens. We don't have a rooster
Edited on Thu Aug-11-11 02:32 PM by Cleita
because they are too aggressive and too noisy, so the eggs the hens lay are sterile. My daughter sneaks in the fertilized eggs for them to brood on and sometimes two hens will hatch a clutch and care for the chicks together. One of the hens has taken the place of a rooster even to attempting to crow. I guess she would be considered a lesbian. :-)
