Time Warner Cable aired gay marriage ads for free

Time Warner Cable says it gave free advertising to a group backing gay marriage as the issue was being debated in the New York state Legislature. It said it initially treated the ads as public service announcements.

Follow this company aired $70,846 worth of advertisements backing gay marriage for free in advance of the Legislature's vote legalizing same-sex marriage, the Times Union is reporting.

The ads, which featured athletes such as Michael Strahan and Sean Avery, actors Cynthia Nixon and Whoopi Goldberg, and politicians such as Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, were treated mistakenly as public service announcements, the Times Union reports.

The ads were produced by the Human Rights Campaign.

The lobbying records show the National Organization for Marriage, which opposed that bill, spent $300,000 to air its own TV campaign (plus $203,762 for radio ads), including a sizable chunk to Time Warner.
