Twenty years after his death, Freddie Mercury is having a moment. First, late last year Sacha Baron Cohen signed on to play Mercury in an upcoming biopic, then this spring debate raged at politico Sarah Palin’s alma mater as Wasilla High School’s jazz choir was forced to sing a heavily edited version of the Queen song “Bohemian Rhapsody” after parents complained because lead singer Mercury was gay. Earlier this month Voice coach and Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine pointed to Mercury as one of his idols.
“There’s no way to hide my straightness,” he told Out magazine, “but if people didn’t think there was a small chance I was gay, then I wouldn’t be doing my job very well. Look at the best ones, guys whose sexuality was always questioned. Bowie. Jagger. Freddie Mercury. I wouldn’t be the front man of a band if that question hadn’t come up at some point.”
There’s even a new tome about the mercurial singer’s band: Is This the Real Life? The Untold Story of Queen by Mark Blake.
