For my first paper in class,we have to review an ad
"Text: What kind of text is it? Explain what the text is arguing. Elaborate on why a commercial might be an appropriate medium for this particular argument. What other mediums might work? Explain why. What mediums might not work? Elaborate.
Reader or Audience: Who is the target audience? Explain how a viewer's background, culture, gender, and/or ethnicity might influence his or her perception of the argument. For example, might a female viewer react differently than a male viewer? Why or why not?
Author: Elaborate on who the author(s) might be? What experiences might have influenced the author(s) that created this argument? What might be motivating the author(s) to construct this argument?
Constraints: Explain what special constraining circumstances might influence a viewer's response to this argument. What constraints might influence the author(s) creation of the text?
Exigence: What happened to cause this argument? Why is the issue addressed in the text perceived as a defect or problem? Is it a new or recurring argument?
Don't forget to include a link to the commercial in your discussion, and remember that the commercial you choose must have an argument (Keep in mind that commercials that address arguments of social concern typically make for the best analyses.).Finally, your analysis should be at least one page (single spaced) and submitted by the due date specified in the course calendar."

I am going to use THIS ad. I'll give you an update on my grade next week.

TRACE Analysis Submission: The Heinz Gay Kiss Ad

As gay marriage becomes more commonplace,it stands to reason that same-sex parents would be the feature of more mainstream commercials. No commercial better displays this than "The Heinz Gay Kiss" commercial.

Text

This is a commercial for Heinz Deli Mayonnaise. It is broadcast largely in Great Britain and Canada. In it, one parent serves a maternal role while one serves a paternal role. There is physical expression of love between spouses common to all families. The children ,who refer to one parent as "Mum" and one as "dad",appear well-adjusted and happy.

Viewer or Audience

The audience is assumed to be young to middle-age gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and accepting parents. It is presumably broadcast in areas where there is a large glbt community and where gay marriages or partnerships are legally allowed and encouraged. The commercial expects the viewer to view gay marriage in a favorable sense.

The Authors

The authors obviously have some contact with the glbt community. They are appealing to the huge influx of same-sex marriages and parenting. They have determined that there is a need for the glbt community to have their relationships given the same treatment as other relationships on television.

Constraints

This commercial would not do well in a conservative area where gay marriage is not recognized. The authors directed it towards a specific group of households.Although the relationship shows the normal reactions between parents and their children, some households may not see this.

Exigence

This commercial was created to accomodate the rapidly increasing number of same-sex marriages and families. It was made to contradict the thought that same-sex couples can not be good parents. This is a new arguement in the commercial world, thanks to the growth of same-sex marriages in the world.
